About Water Quality Group
Dr. Begoña Espiña founded the Water Quality Group in late 2016 with seven researchers (five fellows, one staff researcher, and one associate). The group has since developed two complementary research lines under a shared motto: Nanotechnology for the safe and sustainable use of water resources.
Over the past five years, the group has attracted more than €4M in funding and expanded significantly in both size and activity, with particularly strong momentum in the last three years.
We are well positioned for national and European calls, especially in the sensor line, with funding secured through mid-2026 and partly through mid-2027. Growth in publications has followed this expansion since 2022, reflecting the expected ramp-up time in our field.
Today, the group includes almost 20 members: 1 Group Leader, 2 Research Scientists PI, 2 Research Fellows, 5 Research Engineers, 5 Advanced Students, and 4 Scientific/Project Associates. Our team brings together seven nationalities—Portugal, Spain, Italy, Tunisia, Brazil, Ukraine, and China—and our staff members play key roles in both scientific delivery and group leadership.
